abstract One of the target assign for new materials is possibility to reduce of construction mass in the same or better properties. In that conditions aluminium base composites have found many applications. Introducing to Al matrix the ceramic reinforcing particles gives material characterised by a high value of strength/density ratio. The work present preliminary research on method of manufacturing aluminium base composites reinforced with ultrafine particles and intermetalic phases. Reinforcement phase was yielded by in situ reaction between liquid aluminium and FeO • TiO2 (ilmenite) during mechanical mixing process. Three different composites were obtained by introducing 5.5, 11.0 and 16.5% wt. FeO • TiO2 into aluminium. Solidification process recorded by K-thermocouple in self hardening phosphate mould was shown in Figure 1. Composite materials were compared with Al. Probably not all particles in composite had not reacted according to stoichiometry, so the solidification curves were not exact as Fe-Al systems. Structures of composites were presented in Figure 2 (Al and 5.5% wt. FeO • TiO2 composite) and Figure 3 (Al and 16.5% wt. FeO • TiO2 composite). The mechanical properties of obtained composites were shown in Table 1. As mentioned above there were preliminary researches and more structural and phase analyse investigations are required.
