abstract Advanced materials are conventionally divided into constructional and functional ones. Development in the first group of materials has been characterised by increase of phasal complexity, from single-phase materials through surface-modified materials to fibre re-inforced composites, laminates and functional gradient materials. Along with similar developments in the field of functional materials, the requirements of information and telecommunication technologies have brought about that miniaturisation has been the main feature in this field. Development of new functional materials is unthinkable without new fabrication methods. A feedback occurs here, new functional materials enable a development of new technologies while most new fabrication methods had been made feasible by an utilisation of new technologies. On this broad background the following advanced ceramic functional materials are discussed: biomimetic materials, active smart systems, 1D nanomaterials, photonic crystals and materials for microfluidics.
