abstract In the paper, a composite powders from an intermetallic Fe-Ti-Al alloy with aluminium oxide is characterized. It has been assumed that the intermetallic phases formed during high-temperature synthesis (SHS) will be characterized by very good physical and chemical properties which ensure high functional qualities of thermally sprayed coatings. By means of light and scanning microscopy as well as X-ray diffraction methods, the structure and chemical and phase compositions of the composite powders were determined. Depending on the chemical composition of the initial mixtures, composite sinters, powders and coatings were obtained which contained intermetallic FeAl, Fe4Al13, TiAl and TiAl3 phases as well as two allotropic forms of alumina. The research results have corroborated the appropriateness of the technological procedure of obtaining composite powders with a predetermined phase composition and dispersion structure. The powders were sprayed by plasma method. The structure and chemical composition of the coatings have been characterized. The coatings were produced from composite powders obtained by aluminothermal ilmenite reduction. Key words: composite powders, composite coatings, intermetallic phases, SHS, thermal spraying
