Effect of new branched urethane-methacrylic resins on mechanical and wear properties of ceramic-polymer composites used in dentistry

abstract As a follow-up of studies, carried out until now, on developing properties of ceramic-polymer composites used as dentistry materials, research (degree of conversion - by FTIR spectroscopy, polymerization shrinkage, Vickers’ microhardness) was extended with strength and tribological tests. This paper presents results on the use of a new synthesized urethane-methacrylic resin UM1, which exhibits a very low polymerization shrinkage of 2.5%, as a component of a photocurable composites. Experimental samples were prepared by mixing silane-treated fillers (60% vol.) with resins. The results of flexural strength proved that an additive of UM1 to resins’ composition significantly increases values of this parameter. For example, composite containing 40% wt. of UM1 in organic phase, shows almost 50% higher flexural strength than the one based only on conventional resins. So far, urethane-methacrylic resin UM1 seems to be a promising material and an alternative to methacrylic monomers.
