Influence of artificial biological environment on mechanical properties of carbon-phosphate composites

abstract This paper discusses the results of biological environment influence on the both mechanical and biological properties of the carbon-phosphate composites. These composites constitute a new group of materials that combine mechanical properties of carbon-carbon composites comparable to those of natural bone tissue and bioactivity of calcium phosphates (HAP). The composites were produced in two ways: by adding hydroxyapatite in volume at the initial technological stage and by surface impregnation of ready carbon-carbon composites with hydroxyapatite. Composites were incubated in isotonic solution at a temperature 37°C. Mechanical properties (bending strength, Young’s modulus, ILSS) before and after incubation were compared (Fig. 2). There were no significant changes in mechanical properties for composites enriched in HAP at the surface. For composites with bulk addition of HAP it was observed decreasing of the bending strength and ILSS and increasing of Young’s modulus (Fig. 3). It has been stated that the surface densificated CCHAP composites provide favourable conditions for the growth of bone apatite (Fig. 5).
