abstract Results of preliminary works on synthesis of epoxy/bentonite (montmorillonite) nanocomposites were presented in this article. Commercial organobentonite and modified in our laboratory (with different types of quaternary ammonium compounds - Tab. 1) bentonite were used. As modifiers were used Kamin RMR-50 (alkyltrimethyl ammonium chloride - alkyl chain from C11 to C17), Kamin RM2D-50/A (didecyldimethylammonium chloride) - producent: ICSO Chemical Production Sp. z o.o., Kędzierzyn Koźle, Poland oraz Barquat MB-50 (alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride - alkyl chain from C11 to C15) i Barquat PQ-2 (polymeric N,N-dimethyl-2-hydroxypropyloammonium chloride) from Lonza Ltd. Also traditional fillers - calcium carbonate and talc were used for comparison. Epoxy composites with modified bentonite and other fillers (1 and 5 weight part by 100 part of epoxy resin) were synthesised and influence of filler type and quantity on such properties as flexural strength (Fig. 1), flexural modulus (Fig. 2), deflection (Fig. 3), tensile strength (Fig. 4), Young’s modulus (Fig. 5), elongation at break (Fig. 6) and impact strength (Fig. 7). Addition of modified bentonites to epoxy resin improves most of tested mechanical properties, particularly impact strength and elasticity were improved. Nanocomposites with bentonite modified with polymeric cationic compound - Barquat PQ-2 shows the best properties. In many cases nanocomposites with lower filler content shows better properties than with higher filler content, what is probably connected with easier exfoliation of filler particles. In some cases composites with talc shows very good mechanical properties. Works on presented subject will be continued. Key words: epoxy resin, bentonite, montmorillonite, polymer nanocomposites, nanofillers
