abstract The preliminary research on electrodischarge machining (EDM) of the composite consisting of aluminum alloy matrix 6061 type and of 20 vol. % ceramic Al2O3 reinforcement is presented. The composite was manufactured by the powder metallurgy route using hot extrusion process. Test of EDM cutting with wire electrode and EDM hole drilling were conducted on the composite material and on the matrix material for comparison. It was noticed that velocity (productivity) of composite cutting was nearly 7-times less than of the material without reinforcements. Besides EDM composite cutting is running less stable. During EDM hole drilling, cooper electrode with 0.5 mm diameter was used. The following parameters of EDM process were determined: running drilling speed Vśr, linear wear electrode coefficient ϑL and hole enlargement 2Sb. It was presented that hard and thermal resistant particles of reinforcement in composite influence on significant decreasing of the productivity (velocity) of EDM drilling. Concurrently, the wear of holing during EDM process of composite is much higher than that of EDM process of the matrix materials (without reinforcements).
