abstract In this paper production process parameters and properties of high speed steel (HSS) - tungsten carbide (WC) carbide- -steel have been studied. The high speed steel powder was mixed with the tungsten carbide in ceramic mortar for 30 minutes. The investigated compositions were M, M+10WC (M-high speed steel M35 + wt.% WC). The mixtures were uniaxially cold compacted in a cylindrical die at 800 MPa. The green compacts were sintered in vacuum at 1160, 1175, 1200 and 1220oC for 60 minutes. Properties of the raw powders are given in Table 1 and 2. The as-sintered densities, densification during sintering high speed steel M and carbide-steel M+10WC are presented in Figures 2 and 3. The hardness was measured using the Brinell test. The results are presented in Figure 4. Selected carbide-steels were also subjected to XRD measurements. The results are presented in Figures 5 and 6. Additionally specimens of the M+10WC material, which was fully densities, were analyzed for linear distribuation of selected elements Figure 7. Microstructures high speed steel M and carbide-steel M+10WC sintered at 1220oC are presented in Figures 8-10. From the analysis of the obtained experimental data and microstructural observation it may be concluded that as- sintered properties of carbide-steel is affected to a large extent by the production process variables and the tungsten carbide content as well. Key words: high speed steel, tungsten carbide, carbide-steel, sintering
