abstract Analysis of surface properties of the system composed of carbon bed-crystallization nucleus-liquid AlSi11 alloy has shown that silicon may nucleate at the carbon bed and the α-solution on the silicon bed. On the other hand, nucleation of the α-phase at the carbon bed seems be doubtful, while silicon on the α-solution bed is not possible. These findings were experimentally confirmed for the castings made of the carbon fibre-AlSi11 alloy composite. Metallographic observations have shown occurrence of preliminary precipitations of silicon phase therein, located about or adjacent to the reinforcement fibres, while no primary dendrites of the α-phase were found in these places.
