abstract In this study a novel method for production of Al2O3-Fe composite by the ceramic slip casting was investigated. These composite have been prepared to improve the fracture toughness of the ceramic. Three point bending was used to measure Young modulus E, critical stress intensity factor KIc and its dependence of cracks length C. The investigations showed that the composite have a higher values of KIc coefficient than alumina. Also it has been found that this coefficient grows was function of the crack length. In order to analyze the geometry of cracks path, scanning electron microscope was used. It has been found that cracks are deflected by the Fe particles. As a result the crack length increases and the fracture toughness is higher. Key words: fracture toughness, composites, R curves, microstructure description, ceramic, gradient materials
