Waterborne epoxy coatings filled with nanoparticles

abstract The epoxy waterborne coating compositions and coats filled with modified montmorillonites have been investigated. Self-emulsifing amine hardener Anquamine 401 (product of Air Products, USA) and bisphenol A - based liquid epoxy resin Epidian 6 (Chemical Works „Organika - Sarzyna” in Nowa Sarzyna) were used. The montmorillonite (Bentonit Specjal Extra, product of ZGM „Zebiec” in Zebiec) modified with monoammonium salts of Jeffamine D-230 and Jeffamine D-400 (both products of Huntsman ICI, Holland) as a nanofillers have been tested. The nanofillers were introduced to Epidian 6/Anquamine 401 compositions in amount ranging from 0.5 to 2 wt.%. Resulting compositions were applied with a brush on steel plates and cured at room temperature. The properties of filled and unfilled liquid coating systems are presented in Table 1. Addition of the modified montmorillonite slightly reduces a fluidity and a pot life and infuences hardening time in various way. The properties of cured coating compositions are shown in Tables 2 and 3. Coats containing nanoparticle fillers exhibit higher scratch resistance, adhesion, water resistance and lower water uptake. These features are dependent on the amount of added nanofillers and the kind of modifying ammonium compound (i.e. its hydrophilic character).
