abstract The present work is devoted to analysis definition of some classification divisions related both to basic problems and particulars pertaining to the structure and manufacturing technology of composites and composite products. The analysis has been made for the composites with metal or polymer matrix as well as ceramic composites, including, at the same time, reinforcement components of various chemical composition, forms and dimensions. The notions related to interaction between the reinforcement and matrix are discussed in the work. It was found that the terminology derived from various fields of technology and adapted to the purposes of composites by the experts specializing in these fields is disordered, includes many inaccurate concepts and definitions, ambiguities and synonyms. The classification divisions related to the composites are often inconsequent, first of all with regard to the choice of criteria serving as their basis. The results of the above analysis clearly indicate the need of the efforts aimed at arranging the composite related terminology. The Authors appeal to members of the Polish Society for Composite Materials for initiation of comprehensive discussion devoted to this subject. Key words: composites, terminology
